Willow and Maple classes make up the Year 1 learning zone.
The typical day for Year 1 consists of a maths lesson and enquiry based learning where children explore a range of areas including English, Science, Geography, History and Art. We support the children to explore the states of being – so, rather than just doing maths, we unpick what it means to be a mathematician.
Children learn core reading and writing skills through daily synthetic phonics teaching and guided reading sessions to support both reading and the link to writing. We follow Letters and Sounds and supplement this with a whole host of phonic materials to support all children in their reading.
The English curriculum is taught through high quality texts and follows the principles of the ‘power of reading’ approach. The enquiry is linked to the text and each enquiry starts with a WOW day to ‘hook’ the children into the book and ends with a purposeful, meaningful piece of writing, the showcase.
In addition to whole class teaching, adults lead learning with small groups throughout the day which allow focused teaching, support and extension of children as well as the opportunity to discuss learning and for children to reflect on their next steps with support from their peers and teacher.
Children also have dedicated physical education provision and specialist French, P.E, Art and Food technology teaching during the week.
